League Information

Where, When, and What

7:30 - 9:30pm indoors (virtually) every Monday night.

Men’s doubles (actually one woman plays in the league)

Ladder-type format –

1st hour:  Warm up for 10 minutes or so.  Then you play 4 games with each of the other three players on your court.  Whoever has the most number of wins moves up a court and whoever has the fewest moves down.

2nd hour.  Play 6 games with each player on the court – again most wins moves up (for next time scheduled) and fewest wins move down.  Ties are broken by racket spin or by played tiebreakers

League “Feel”

Caliber of play is from USTA 3.5 to 4.0 with a few 4.5s sprinkled in.  I keep track of results so that each week you’re scheduled to play where your prior play places you.  So, you should always, or at least usually, be playing with folks at your level.

Atmosphere of the league:  If social is 0 and competitive is 10, I’d say our league is a 7 or 8.

Scheduling and Administration

We have 3 seasons:  Fall (Sept through mid-January), Spring (Late January through May), and Summer (June through August).

Before I make the schedule, players have total flexibility about when and how often they want to play – full time, half time, 1/month, and even something like “None through 7/15, then every other week after that.”  And, if there are any dates you know now you need to be scheduled off, I can easily accommodate.  After the schedule comes out, each scheduled player is either to show up or arrange a sub (who plays for no charge).  A list of players, potential subs, phone numbers, and eMail addresses is included with the schedule.

During the Fall and Spring seasons, we have 35+ guys scheduled to play, and we occupy 5-6 courts every week.  During Summer, we have fewer players scheduled, so we end up with 4-5 courts each night.

League Rules

General
1. Arrive on time to be on the court at 7:30 pm.  First round play should start NO LATER THAN 7:45pm.
2. Each player partners with every other on the court in each of 2 rounds.
3. 1st round is 3 sets x 4 games each.  2nd round: 3 sets x 6 games.  Regular scoring (deuces, ads) for all games.
4.  Keep track of number of games won each set and round.  Record them on the court sheet.  For all players on a court, 1st round wins should total 24.  2nd round wins should total 36.
5. Highest win total player moves up (except "top" court); lowest moves down (except "bottom" court).
6.   After each round, ties are broken by "spin" (or by tiebreaker if time allows and all players agree to such). See #11 below.  If tie is broken by a racket spin (rather than by a tiebreaker), please write "SPIN" on the form next to ↓ or ↑.
7.   When getting a sub:  send me an eMail; provide sub's name (and phone# if not on this sheet).  Try to get a sub at about your level (see guidance).
Additional detail
8. For round 1, effort will be made to assign you to the proper court.  Tolerance is requested.
9.2nd round may start before 8:30 pm if all players are available.
10.   If 1st round is incomplete by 8:35pm, results are based on scores thru that time including a current in-play untied game as complete.  Arrivers after 7:37pm causing incomplete set may be penalized (at Jon's discretion).
11.  After the 2nd round, subs automatically lose flips vs. scheduled players.  However, a high-scoring sub keeps other players on the court from moving up.
12.    Starting every set, teammates decide who serves first on their team - no need to stay on cycle from prior sets.  In 2nd and 3rd sets, the team to serve first is the one with the player due to serve next per the prior set's cycle.

League History

Now in our 24th year.  Fall '19 is our 70th season!

In its current form, this Monday Night Tennis group has been going on since the Fall of 1996.  Besides Jon, current players that also played in the league in the 1990s are Don Anson, Bob Levy, Edie Michelson, Canaan Sonnenschein, and Mike Wieser.

Through the early 1990s, and starting who knows when, Pat Patterson ran a Monday night tennis group at Forest Lake.  Steve Bender ran the league with just 15 players in the Spring of 1996.  Steve introduced the ladder concept to the league.  Jon Michelson took over in the Fall of 1996.

Other Info.

It would really mean a lot to me if:

    (1) Late arrivers call the club to inform me that their on their way.  Until I know we have 16 people there, I'm in panic mode.  Please be on time or call the club at 314-878-2722.  See the "Look at this!" note on your schedule.  Of course, being on the court right at 7:30pm is best.  But, if you can't be there right on time, CALL.

    (2) Those needing subs arrange for such themselves and then notify me, and do so earlier rather than last minute if possible.  The schedule shows who is off and additional names and contact info. for those that want to sub.

Reminders

Read the rules.

FILL OUT THE FORM on the court each week and make sure that I get it.

Let me know if you know of other individuals who would fit well within our group.  We ESPECIALLY NEED players for the Summer season.

MOST OF ALL, HAVE FUN.

Please Contact Jon if you have any questions.
